Line editing/copyediting
Ensuring clarity and consistency in writing style, expression and structure; ensuring consistency (and adherence to style guides where appropriate) in spelling, grammar, punctuation, reference and citation style; checking for errors, repetition and ambiguities; ensuring appropriate use of language. Line editing involves more in-depth sentence-level editing than copyediting does.
Proofreading
The final check before a document is published: checking spelling, grammar, punctuation, reference and citation style; cross-checking references and citations; checking consistency in presentation.
Proof-editing
A service combining elements of both copyediting and proofreading, according to the needs of the client.
Developmental editing
In-depth editing, feedback and writing support for work that requires significant development, whether in terms of structure, argument, language, style, tone and/or accessibility. Depending on the level of intervention required, developmental editing may require a degree of subject knowledge and/or specialism. I will always be honest with you about my abilities and knowledge in relation to your subject area, and I will never take on work if I do not have the knowledge required.
